Psychoeducation Tips
Confidence. Silliness. You What?
When I think about confidence in adults, I don’t picture power poses or people who dominate a room. The people who strike me as genuinely confident are the ones who can be a bit silly.
Not constantly, and not in a forced “fun at work” kind of way. But in those small, unguarded moments; when someone can laugh at themselves, pull a ridiculous face, dance badly, or admit they don’t know something without their stomach tightening in shame.
This, to me, is confidence.
Because the ability to look a little foolish means you trust yourself enough to not need to be perfect. You’re not spending all your energy managing the image of being in control. You’re just… you. And that ease gives everyone around you permission to relax, too.
When we were kids, play was effortless. We didn’t stop mid-laugh to wonder what people thought. But as adults, we start armouring up; worrying about looking “silly,” “unprofessional,” or “too much.”
And yet, those are the very moments that make us feel most alive and connected.
So if you want to build confidence, don’t just focus on doing things “right.”
Practise letting yourself look a little foolish on purpose. Tell a bad joke. Sing off-key. Wear the weird hat. Let yourself laugh loudly.
Real confidence isn’t about always being composed. It’s about knowing you’ll be okay even when you’re not.
I offer complimentary 15-20 minute calls where we can explore your situation and how working together might help.
