Psychoeducation Tips
Dread.
Everyone has those mornings when they wake up and just don’t want to get up. It’s like we’re scared to start the day. This can feel incredibly stressful and it can feel difficult to manage.
We might now even know why we’re feeling like this. Maybe nothing obvious has happened yet. Perhaps there’s tension in your chest, your body feels on edge, like it’s waiting for the other penny to drop.
If we don’t get on too well with uncertainty (and let’s face it, that’s every human at least on occasion) then becoming aware that you’re feeling like this might make it even worse.
In this state, our mind can start racing: “will I be judged? “ “will something go wrong?” “am I good enough?”
When we feel this level of angst and uncertainty, the following exercises can help you calm a little and help your nervous system get out the right side of the bed.
1. No screen
It can be so easy to reach for our phone to distract ourselves from hat we’re feeling. I am guilty as everyone else reading this but when we wake up feeling extra alert and on edge, scrolling and busy-ing ourselves might not be the most helpful.
2. Do butterfly hugs.
Cross your arms over your chest and tap your shoulders slowly, left-right-left-right. This bilateral stimulation helps settle the brain. It gives your system the message: “I’m here. I’m safe. I’m regulating now.” It draws on similar theory to EMDR therapy (something I’m currently training in).
You can watch an example of this here.
3. Name one thing you’re definitely doing today.
“I don’t know how what will happen this morning, but right now I’m going to brush my teeth and have a glass of water”
“I don’t know what I will learn today but I know I’ll have a shower.”
“I know I’ll feed myself.”
This brings back agency. Your system needs certainty so give it what you can guarantee.
Because once you’re back in your body, the rest gets quieter. And the day starts to feel possible again.
